Space Gallery ‘Wintering’ Exhibition 2026
In autumn, Space Gallery in Whanganui issued a Open Exhibition call around the theme ‘Wintering’. In this exhibition, “Winter is celebrated as something we should actively participate in rather than simply survive. Winter is explored as a lived process - of retreat, endurance, preservation, and quiet transformation - where stillness is active and becomes a powerful vehicle for growth.”
I was pleased to have two of my photographs accepted into the exhibition.
"Some fly away. Some stay" Some escape winter, others endure. Suspended between departure and permanence, the birds and building become parallel expressions of adaptation. The work considers wintering as both a seasonal strategy and a metaphor for human experience, reflecting on mobility, belonging, resilience, and the unequal freedom to leave. Wintering is not always a journey elsewhere; sometimes it is the quiet act of staying. Photographic print on Ilform Smooth Cotton Rag paper, unframed, unmounted.
"Pause" Winter asks us to pause. The red light arrests our progress while the rainbow offers a promise beyond the clouds. In between lies a moment of reflection, where uncertainty gives way to possibility. The work suggests that hope is not found by outrunning winter, but by discovering that moments of stillness often reveal the path ahead.
